What is CASB?

A Cloud Access Security Broker is a software appliance that sits between a cloud service user and a cloud (or hosted service) application. The purpose of the appliance is to provide security monitoring of all activity between the user and the online applications.

Why do you need it? Does your organization use cloud-based services? Do you have critical data stored in the cloud? Well, who or what is monitoring all the activity and users accessing critical data? How do you stop outside threats who can compromise login credentials anytime and anywhere?? Here’s why you need to consider adding CASB to defend your cloud-based assets!!

The CASB service follows the security standards set by the organization. So, the CASB monitors cloud app security in much the same way a firewall monitors security for a local computer network.

First, A CASB service monitors and approves (or denies) the registration of all users of the cloud application.

A control list is created containing all the login credentials for every user. The appliance can be hardware-based on site or provided online between the user and the cloud application. If a guest is unable to meet specific login credentials then access is denied. Under best practices, this level of authentication denies robots and most hacking attempts. All your cloud-based service providers should offer a similar level of protection. CASB fills in any potential gaps in online registration methods. Additionally, the CASB system allows your administrators to monitor and edit credentials as your staff and permission needs change.

If a user account is somehow compromised or requests information outside the permission scope, the CASB monitors and alerts the administrator to this activity. Depending upon your security standards, the request can be flagged or denied if it sits outside the permission scope. This is just one example of how CASB monitors and secures your cloud system on your behalf. Given the fact more organizations have an increasing number of mobile and remote users, the CASB is a vital security component.

The CASB is strategically positioned to monitor and catch potential issues that can occur outside your corporate network!!!

Cloud Workload Protection is a software appliance that scans your cloud traffic for data breaches and related concerns. A scanner is installed within the cloud environment to help ensure the safe passage of data between your cloud resources and your corporate environment. Cloud Workload Protection is designed to work with IaaS or Infrastructure As A Service providers’ infrastructure. Why is this important and why do you need to be aware of this service?

If your business is using an IaaS provider like (Amazon Web Services) then you need to be aware of a specific security risk. Go back and read the security policy standard of your IaaS provider. You’ll soon find out the IaaS provider does not take responsibility for securing your traffic between their environment and yours.

In Summary:
